\u201cLament of an Ancient Alumnus\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Aliquis” <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Miami Student<\/em> (May 8, 1867, Oxford Ohio), 1.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

For many years \u201cOld Main,\u201d which was located near the site of today\u2019s Harrison Hall, was the main classroom building and the center of student life at Miami.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first issue of the Miami Student<\/em> featured this pseudonymous poem about a proposal to tear down the deteriorating \u201cOld Main.\u201d In this poem, set to the often-parodied popular tune, \u201cWoodman Spare that Tree<\/a>,\u201d a Miami alumnus pleads nostalgically for the preservation of Old Main, until the speaker realizes that their own money may be required to preserve the structure. This revelation alters the speaker\u2019s point of view: \u201cI\u2019ll gladly see it rot!\u201d Nevertheless, Old Main stood until 1958.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
